چکیده

We present a theoretical study of ion transport in microchannels containing nanoporous ion-selective membranes. The developed model includes the effect of water splitting as well as reactions between the liquid and the surface groups on the walls. By numerically solving the full PNP (Poisson–Nernst–Planck) problem coupled with the flow problem, results are obtained both in the simple non-advective regime and in the regimes were electroosmosis is important. The surface charge is determined dynamically via interactions with water ions, and the water ions are thus an important part of the system. To understand the behavior of these ions we supplement the numerical study with analytical models for the water ion transport valid in the case of fixed and vanishing surface charge density.

Charge inversion, water splitting, and vortex suppression due to DNA sorption on ion-selective membranes and their ion-current signatures.

The physisorption of negatively charged single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) of different lengths onto the surface of anion-exchange membranes is sensitively shown to alter the anion flux through the membrane. At low surface concentrations, the physisorbed DNAs act to suppress an electroconvection vortex instability that drives the anion flux into the membrane and hence reduce the overlimiting current t...

High Performance Nanocomposite Cation Exchange Membrane: Effects of Functionalized Silica-Coated Magnetic Nanoparticles

Nanocomposite cation exchange membranes (CEMs) were prepared by adding various amounts of functionalized silica-coated magnetite nanoparticles to the sulfonated polyethersulfone (sPES) polymeric matrix. The particles were synthesized first by the co-precipitation method (M0). Different surface modifications were then carried out on them by grafting three functional groups of mercaptopropyl, pro...

A molecular dynamics simulation of water transport through C and SiC nanotubes: Application for desalination

In this work the conduction of ion-water solution through two discrete bundles of armchair carbon and silicon carbide nanotubes, as useful membranes for water desalination, is studied. In order that studies on different types of nanotubes be comparable, the chiral vectors of C and Si-C nanotubes are selected as (7,7) and (5,5), respectively, so that    a similar volume of fluid is investigated ...

Phenylthiourea Modified Highly Ordered Nanoporous Silica for Heavy Metal Ion (Hg2+ ) Trapping

The phenylthiourea-substituted triethoxysilane as a silane agent was synthesized and grafted on highly ordered nanoporous silica (LUS- 1) with a textured morphology and hexagonal array. This material (Tu-LUS-1) contained 0.8 mmol/g of soft base phenylthiourea group and surface area 760 m2 g-1  and was able to adsorb 0.75 mmolHg/g of TU-LUS-1 in endothermic reaction.
